UNA's Most.Storied.Conference.Ever!


The Utah Annual Nonprofit Conference offers nonprofit professionals a place to gather, refresh their sense of mission, and explore new ways to look at the opportunities and challenges they face. We launch the conference with a continental breakfast and an opportunity to catch up with industry experts on new products and services and spend time with new and old conference buddies.
After breakfast, this year’s keynote, Andy Goodman, will explore the tremendous power stories have in shaping our world view and offer specific ways your nonprofit can use stories to advance your mission. Following the breakout, you’ll spend the day attending your choice of 24 breakout-sessions, expanding your network, meeting experts in the Expo Hall, and enjoying a luncheon featuring our second annual awards. We'll conclude the day by providing you with a time and place to develop your strategy for applying what you've learned. And then, if you're lucky and have completed your Passport cards, you may take home one of the many wonderful items provided by our sponsors and exhibitors. (And because we know you so well, we’ve even included a break out session on self care.)

Andy Goodman                              Change the Story, Change the World          

Andy’s Keynote will explore the power of stories have in shaping our world view and offer specific ways your nonprofit can use stories to advance your mission. Many of the following 24 breakout sessions offer insights into how incorporate story in unexpected ways into your organization.

Apollo Burgamy   Media Matters: How to Tell Your Story Straight in Times of Crisis   Lead the narrative in times of crisis. Thisworkshop will give you the basic knowledge and tools you will need to managecrisis communications. One of the primary things it will do is teach you how torecognize what a crisis is and when your organization is experiencing one. Far too often, organizations and leaders treat every potential negative occurrence as a crisis, which both drains valuable resources and diminishes an organization's credibility. Understanding the differences between issues, emergencies and true crises often will represent the difference between success or failure of an organization's communication efforts.
Jeff Steed   Protecting Your Story: The Law and Your Organization   Telling your story does not happen in a vacuum. Is your organization protected against a range of internal and external threats that could keep it from presenting its message effectively? Protections we will discuss include claiming intellectual property protections, such as copyrights, trademarks, patents, etc., for the organization’s brand, content, website, technologies, and so on; agreements with current and departing employees, volunteers, and others; and defamation claims, among others.
Luke Taylor   FASB ASU 2016-14 Nonprofit Changes   The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has issued new guidance for the presentation of nonprofit organizations' financial statements. The standards update includes key changes related to net asset classification, liquidity and availability of resources, expense reporting, investment return, and the statement of cash flows.
Tammy Reque   Using Data to Achieve Your Digital Goals   One of the best things about the digital marketing era is being able to measure your strategies and use that data to prioritize your work. Learn how to use tools such as Google Analytics, Google Trends and Social Media Insights Facebooks, Twitter and Instagram) to build your online community, define KPIs for your organization and track your goals and performance.
 Anika Price and Jessica Hercules   Keep the Volunteers You Like and Find the Volunteers You Need   Volunteers serve non-profits in myriad capacities, providing countless resources to your organization. Learning who your volunteers are and why they are committed to your cause will help you retain quality volunteers, cultivate better volunteer experience, and increase your reach to new volunteers who share your vision of a stronger community.
 Varden Hadfield   Simplifying Fundraising for Small Nonprofits   For nonprofits with 0 to 2 fundraising staff, the constant juggle of different responsibilities can leave staff feeling like Bartholemew Cubbins with 500 Hats! The many possibilities for raising funds can be overwhelming, asking people for money can be intimidating, and recruiting board members who donate and ask can be challenging. Come feel inspired to overcome these challenges through real donor success stories. You'll learn the maximum return on investment opportunities for fundraising, especially with major gifts, and learn key principles and practical skills for maximizing your limited fundraising time.

  Reclaiming Voices: How Elevating Marginalized Communities Can Make Your Story Stronger    Drawing on their work in elevating Native American voices, Utah Dine’ Bikeyah Communications Director Alastair Bitsoi and Torrey House Press Publisher and Editorial Director Kirsten Johanna Allen will lead an interactive discussion about how to successfully tell the *real* stories of marginalized communities and avoid the common hazards of unintentional stereotyping, implicit bias, and unwitting cultural appropriation. Learn how even the best-meaning allies can get it wrong and how you can tell more effective stories by understanding unheard storytellers in the communities you represent and serve.
Rob Harter   Increase your donors through demonstrating your impact   Donors most often give through a nonprofit, not simply to a nonprofit. So what are donors looking for when they give? What kind of data do they want from you that will inspire and motivate them to continue giving to you and your nonprofit? More specifically, how are millennials impacting fundraising for today's nonprofits? In this seminar, you will learn how to clearly demonstrate the impact of your nonprofit through creative means (video etc), social media and written form. You will also learn what donors are looking for in regards to their giving in order to retain their giving, while understanding why it is so critical to show how your donor's support is making a tangible difference, especially with millennials.
Jocelyn Kearl   Show Your Impact: Craft a Compelling Success Story   Remember when your teachers told you to show, not tell when you wrote something? Sometimes as organizations, we get busy telling people a lot about our services and programs, about our events, about how to donate but we forget to create connections to the people who are impacted. Our services and programs would be useless without the people who benefit from them. In a world where attention is easily diverted, keeping your audience engaged is a challenge, but learning to construct a success story that shows your impact is critical. In this session, we’ll talk through the elements and steps so that you can make your own appeal through good stories.
Jordan Giles   Growing Donations through Social Media   The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation is saving more lives becouse of their social media efforts. Learn what they did - and how you can do the same for your organization.
Jacob Johnson   Measuring and Sharing the Impact of Volunteers   Effectively measuring the qualitative and quantitative impact of your volunteers can make a significant difference for your organization. Impact data can be used to increase volunteer retention, board support, fundraising, and community engagement. In this session, you’ll learn how impact data is different from other data, identify what qualitative and quantitative indicators you’ll use to measure volunteer impact in your program, and decide how best to share the impact of your volunteers with others.
 Isabel Gardett   Stories of the Future: Building a Culture of Experimentation and Innovation    Time and resource constraints can make nonprofits feel stretched just meeting the baseline needs of their missions. But any organization that hopes to succeed in the long term must find new ways to deliver that mission as circumstances change. This session will provide tested, actionable methods to drive innovation and build a culture of experimentation with the staff and resources you have. In particular, it will focus on innovation that serves your core goals rather than diluting efforts or causing scope creep. We will also address engagement and how to reward and recognize innovative thinking.
Dan Davis   Discover Your Story, Then Change the World   Discover your own story. It's the peeling back of the layers of your own story that ties your organization's cause and mission to your own personal mission. Once we discover our own story, we realize that our lives are more than just a list of chronological events. It's all about discovering our potential and finding what we are 'meant to do'. Once you do that, then you can change the world.
Katie Hudman   Ten Utah Laws Every Employer Should Know   How does story matter in the world of Utah employment law?  Come to this break-out session to find out!  Utah is generally perceived to be an employer-friendly state. Thus, many businesses wrongly assume that there are no state-specific laws governing their employment practices.  But, that is incorrect!  There are actually many Utah laws that employers must become familiar with in order to avoid legal violations.  This session will highlight ten key Utah employment laws every employer should know. 
Kyle Robbins   Financial Oversight: The Board's Role   One of the most important roles of a board is its responsibility for oversight of the financial well-being of a nonprofit but board members and management are often unsure of exactly what this entails. This session is designed to answer these questions and provide attendees with the skills they need to make sure effective oversight occurs. Simple analytical tools will be taught which will assist attendees in analyzing the financial health of organizations and recognize financial "red flags".
Jacob Allen   The Giving State   The Giving State is the first ever statewide data-driven report published on philanthropy and the social sector. Utah is poised to lead the nation in giving, not only in volume but in excellence as well. This report is a tool to help us reflect, foster ongoing dialogue, and spark ideas of tangible steps we can take toward excellence. Now is the time to harness Utah’s innovative spirit to ensure a thriving future for our communities.

Denise Druce   Serenity Now: Finding Quiet in Times of Chaos   This breakout session will provide you with
several practical, easy to use, and proven techniques to lower your stress.
Shalaun Howell, Amy Hansen, and Michael Durham   Your 990 Exposed   Do you know what your 990 says about you? Join an attorney, CPA, and foundation executive as they explore in detail how donors, regulators, and the media look at the 990. As perhaps your organization’s most public document, your 990 reveals a bounty of information that can raise all types of questions to a skilled reader. Through a variety of real-life examples, we’ll highlight concerns that are raised through the ways you answer questions on the form and discuss what you can do when your story isn’t ideal. This session is for nonprofit staff and board members.
Jared Lisonbee   Using Data to Tell Your Story   An old-fashioned liquid thermometer with no numbers gives a general idea about how hot or cold the temperature is outside, but a precisely-measured numeric temperature (data) gives a much more complete and meaningful story about our experience. This session focuses on the importance of collecting and using data in precise and informative ways to tell your story and to 1) account the impact of your work to existing funders and stakeholders, 2) communicate the importance of the work you do to cultivate new supporters, and 3) strategically guide the decisions your organization makes to grow and improve your effectiveness.
Crystal Young-Otterstrom and Troy Williams   Advocating for Your Cause on the Hill  

Unlike many states, in Utah we actually have access to our lawmakers, and believe it or not, they listen! This session will focus on the tools and techniques you and your nonprofit organization can use to turn that access into results. Come learn from two of Utah's most successful grassroots lobbyists and what they have learned over the years spending time up on the Hill. Topics to be covered include the following:

  • ·Learning the language of the legislature (ie, code-switching).
  • ·Political theater vs. relationship building; when to use which technique.
  • ·The power of the constituent.
  • ·Basic do's and don'ts for any 501C3.
  • ·Differences in your legislative audience (ie, Federal, State, Local, School Boards, etc.).
  • ·Navigating the system; how to work through a staffer.
  • ·Legislative trends to be aware of.
  • ·Divorcing your job from your emotions.
Matt Mateus and Adam Sherlock   Using Your Logic Model to Tell A Powerful Story   An organization's logic model is used to articulate its theory of change and is used in identifying the clear outcomes and strategies employed to achieve them. Although often created for grants and not the most inspiring of documents, it doesn't have to be this way. Logic models can be used to tell a powerful story about your organization and to engage, inspire, and motivate your staff, board, community, and of course, your funders! Matt Mateus and Adam Sherlock from Spy Hop Productions will share their journey in developing a logic model that serves as a guiding document for both evaluation efforts and a vision for success and help you to develop your own blueprint for success!
