Advocacy Essentials

Have you been itching to know how to be an advocate for your organization and the people it serves? Look no further than our new training, Advocacy Essentials! Come learn advocacy basics from UNA staff, that will help you jumpstart your advocacy efforts. Every nonprofit has the legal right to advocate and some lobbying, so come feel empowered to do so! Attendees are encouraged to bring their organizations current stories, mission, vision statement and any ideas to share and discuss.

1. WHY NONPROFITS SHOULD BE ADVOCATES
a. Why do you want to be an advocate?
b. What are the desires of the communities you serve, how do you fill those desires, and why should the government and the public care
c. What makes your nonprofit organization suited for advocacy? 
d. Why advocate now? 

2. ADVOCACY AND LOBBYING, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
a. Defining Advocacy 
b. Defining Lobbying 
c. Why you can and should do both

3. LAWS AND REGULATIONS  
a. Advocacy laws
b. Lobbying laws
c. IRS regulations 
d. 501(h) election and making sure you're squared away

4. ENGAGING AND WORKING WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS
a. Know who your elected officials are 
b. Engaging with local officials 
c. Engaging with state officials
d. Engaging with federal officials 
e. Identifying who to contact about your issue or organization

5. PLANNING WHERE AND WHEN TO START  
a. Define what you want to do
b. Plan your and/or your organization's advocacy 
c. Plan meetings with elected officials 
d. Ready! Set! Go!

Collyn Mosquito joined the UNA team in April 2019 as the Public Policy Program Coordinator. Collyn is passionate about policy and politics (the good kind). Throughout his educational and professional experience, Collyn has sought to make a positive impact in the world of government and policy. Prior to joining the UNA team, Collyn worked on public policy in both city and state governments, built a strategy for an advocacy group, managed a political campaign, volunteered for various nonprofits, and married a nonprofit founder. Wherever he is, Collyn is always seeking to do the most good and be engaged.

Collyn received a B.A. in Political Science from Brigham Young University with a minor in civic engagement. He is currently attending Westminster College for his graduate degree in community leadership.
