Position Summary: The Development Specialist will:

· Support the Development Department’s fundraising efforts by assisting with existing donor stewardship and new donor cultivation

· Take the lead on monitoring, maintaining and growing specific donor groups (including preparing certain communications)

· Assist with grant proposal preparation and reporting

· Support and attend major events organized by the Development Department, with additional sponsorship oversight for the Holiday Broadcast Fundraising event

· Provide other general support to the Director of Development and Executive Director, and work closely and collaboratively with other member of the Development Department and various departments within the organization.

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, very good written and verbal communication, excellent interpersonal skills and be very detail-oriented.

Primary Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities


1. Assist the Director of Development and Donor Relations Specialist with (i) stewardship activities to retain and increase support from existing donors; and (ii) donor cultivation activities to learn about, engage with and convert prospective donors. Specifically:

a. Prepare content for and send monthly targeted engagement communications to specific donor groups (e.g. newsletters, E-blasts; planned giving-related emails)

b. Assist with review and approval of campaign emails and other donor outreach materials;

c. Help maintain and monitor portfolios of key donor groups such as (i) mid-level individuals (ii) major-level individuals (iii) corporate giving; and (iv) planned/ legacy giving (i.e., estate planning bequests, stocks, donor-advised funds);

d. Analyze donor database for donor giving history and associated trends, and maintain donor dashboards for tracking and reporting monthly data;

e. Utilize and improve systems for identifying, tracking and qualifying prospective donors; and

f. Provide direct support to Executive Director and Director of Development for engagement with key existing and prospective donors (e.g., tracking donor communications, targeted research, scheduling meetings, preparing information packets, actioning follow ups, etc.). Design and implement coordinated and individualized outreach and engagement strategies for these individuals.


2. Assist the Development Department’s full-time Grant Writer with research, preparation, and tracking of foundation and corporate grant applications and reporting. Specifically:

a. Review grant application drafts prepared by the Grant Writer/other members of fundraising team for messaging and editorial consistency;

b. Review grant impact reports prepared by the Grant Writer/other members of fundraising team for messaging and editorial consistency;

c. If required, prepare grant application and/or impact report drafts; and

d. Assist with keeping key data/information/attachments up to date as common inputs to grant submissions or reporting


3. Support and attend events organized by the Development Department. Specifically:

a. Oversee sponsorships for all three of The Road Home’s major events.

b. Support and attend other annual or periodic events and activities organized by the Development Department as needed; and

c. Actively participate in tabling events, speaking engagements and facility tours.

Community Relations

1. Organize and attend meetings and events with donors or key community members.

a. Speak with clarity and confidence regarding The Road Home’s mission.

b. Represent The Road Home at various events and make key connections.


1. Act as Development Team lead for the Services and Development Committees (which are committees of the Board of Trustees), involving scheduling of meetings; preparing agenda; preparing meeting presentation materials; submitting minutes for approval etc.

2. Assist in the production of call sheets and briefing documents as needed.

3. Coordinate interdepartmentally to assist with keeping key data and information up to date as inputs to internal or external Development Department materials; and

4. Assist the Director of Development in various tasks as needed.
Desired Qualifications: Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree that demonstrates development of the desired knowledge, skills or experience required for this role. One year of equivalent experience for each year of college accepted.

Required experience:

1. Minimum two years’ in a fundraising/ development/ donor engagement type role, or the ability to demonstrate comparable relevant experience

2. Working with diverse populations including low-income, homeless, minorities, business leaders, and public officials

3. Preparing written communications for external audiences

4. Data analysis

5. Strong public speaking/ relationship building

Preferred experience:

1. Donor database management/navigation

2. Grant or proposal writing

3. Design experience (Canva)

Skills and Requirements


1. Excellent writing, review and editing skills

2. Very detail-oriented

3. Ability to summarize research to meet a specific brief and effectively communicate findings to the intended audience

4. Ability to engage with existing donors, prospective donors, and other members of the community with impact and influence, in order to encourage involvement in the agency’s work (both financial and non-financial)

5. Willingness and ability to speak publicly to a variety of groups about the agency

6. Willingness and ability to help the Development Department address a variety of situations with representatives of the media, elected officials, community groups and others.

Systems & IT

1. Strong working knowledge of core IT software including Microsoft Office (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

2. Willingness and ability to quickly learn how to navigate and leverage donor management information systems (in particular, EveryAction as the agency’s current donor software)

3. Competence and comfort with programs that focus on numerical data and analysis
