Organization's Mission: HEAL is a grassroots organization focused on safeguarding the health of the people of Utah by
advocating for 1) clean air policies and practices, 2) minimizing and mitigating the impacts of
climate change through accelerated transition to clean energy and carbon drawdown strategies, 3)
limiting exposure to radioactive waste and other industrial toxins, and 4) preventing and reversing
the impacts of these environmental health risks that are borne disproportionately by racially and
ethnically marginalized, rural, and low-income communities.
Position Summary: The Development Director collaborates with the Executive Director, other HEAL Utah staff, board, and
supporters to continue building one of Utah’s most successful statewide grassroots environmental
advocacy organizations. This Development Director role is critical to the sustainability and
effectiveness of a small, collaborative organization like HEAL, and to our relevance within our larger
community. We’re looking for someone who is passionate, professional, organized, enthusiastic, and
deeply skilled in building relationships. This opportunity provides a strong candidate with the
opportunity to help set strategy, implement and see the outcomes of their success, and grow with the
organization. The Development Director’s fundraising work will support HEAL’s general operations as
well as campaigns related to energy and climate, clean air, and radioactive and toxic waste, HEAL
Utah’s three main issue areas.
Primary Responsibilities: The HEAL Utah Development Director will be responsible for top to bottom planning and execution of the
development strategy, including the following:
Strategic Development and Fundraising Management
● Create a strategic fundraising plan that integrates grants, donors, the annual campaign drive,
foundations, business and individual partnerships, fundraising events, and other fundraising activities.
● Work with the Executive Director to prepare annual fundraising budget targets and calendar and
independently manage activities to meet those objectives.
● Organize and support the work of the HEAL Board Fundraising Committee to review, augment, and
help execute fundraising plans.
● Support HEAL staff through pursuit of fundraising activities to support specific campaigns and new
opportunities.
● Keep engaged and up to speed on HEAL campaigns and activities in order to message publicly and
draft relevant fundraising materials.
● Coordinate administrative duties with Executive Director and Office Manager.
Grant Management
● Adopt and maintain the annual grant milestones calendar that includes application and reporting
preparation periods and deadlines.
● Oversee the preparation of priorities, grant proposals, and reports (narrative and financial) working
with the Executive Director, other staff, and contracted grant writer.
● Research and pursue new funding sources for general support or specific issue campaigns or projects.
● Maintain relationships with contacts from granting organizations.
● Track the status of all grant proposals, maintain foundation files, and maintain evaluation metrics.
Membership and Donors
● Manage all aspects of donor relationships, working with the Office Manager to properly categorize,
record, and acknowledge donations.
● Create and execute strategy for donor recruitment, engagement, and retention.
● Work with the Executive Director to maintain a regular meeting schedule with major donors.
● Work closely with the board to recruit and develop new donors at all levels.
● Work with the Communications Director to oversee the development, promotion, and execution of
annual fundraising messaging.
● Conduct analysis to understand current and lapsed donor needs and interests.
● Expand HEAL Utah’s donations from major donors, regular members, foundations, business
partnerships and on-line and social media giving programs.
● Oversee the overall planning and execution of HEAL Utah’s major annual fundraising events, which
currently include a spring event and a fall party.
● Plan and coordinate smaller gatherings and strategic meetings for major donors, business allies, and
monthly donors.
Database and documentation management
● Manage the membership/donor database (currently Salsa CRM and Engage).
● Generate monthly thank you calls and cards and annual tax summaries for donors.
● Oversee the apportionment of expenses to campaigns and funding sources.
Desired Qualifications: This position is a good fit for individuals who are self-motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, comfortable
working independently, able to multitask, and willing to take initiative. Excellent verbal and written
communication skills, ability to quickly learn and use software, and ease interacting with the public is a must.
Required:
● Passionate about protecting public health and the environment and specifically about HEAL Utah’s
mission, campaigns, and strategies.
● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
● At least 2 years professional experience, with a preference for experience developing and executing
major donor strategies, annual campaigns, events, and grant writing and development.
● Ability to think creatively and strategically in communicating HEAL’s work to grow relationships with
donors.
● Envision and execute events that will raise money and attract and engage new and existing donors.
● Excellent written and oral communications skills, and ability to lead the organization’s interactions with
donors, grantmakers, foundations, and businesses.
● Data and budget management and metrics and evaluation creation and management.
● Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks, projects, and high-quality, deliverables on tight
deadlines.
● Aptitude for leading and collaborating with other staff, and coordinating activities across a team
through clear internal communication.
● Professionalism, accountability, independence, and initiative.
● Demonstrated commitment to centering the values of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in
environmental advocacy work.
Preferred:
● Experience applying for and managing federal grants.
● Familiarity with the Utah-specific context and the state-wide communities where we work.
● Familiarity with relevant management software and online platforms for giving and task management
including Salsa, Clickup, social media platforms, etc.
Physical Requirements:
● Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Occasional lifting and moving
around materials and equipment up to 25 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable
individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Some localized travel is required.
● The Development Director is a 40-hour per week, regular full-time position, with some occasional
evening and weekend activities.
