Position Summary: OWCAP is seeking an innovative and motivated individual that enjoys problem-solving and building cohesive teams within Head Start. This position will implement behavioral assessments, observations, and referrals, along with creating strategies for supporting children with challenging behaviors and other social, emotional, and mental health concerns. The Mental Health Specialist will utilize their sociable and flexible personality to connect with students and parents to detect behavioral and mental health concerns while encouraging appropriate behavioral modification. Mental Health Specialists are results-oriented and analytical when consulting with parents and staff to promote positive mental health.
Primary Responsibilities: • Provide supports for effective classroom management, positive learning environments, supportive teacher practices and strategies for supporting children with challenging behaviors and other social, emotional, and mental health concerns.
• Improve classroom management and teacher practices through strategies that include using classroom observations and consultations to address teacher and individual child needs and creating physical and cultural environments that promote positive mental health and social and emotional functioning.
• Consult with parents and staff concerning assessment summaries and classroom observations to create a behavior plan to be used within the Head Start classroom.
• Provide training for parents of Head Start children and staff on identifying possible behavioral (including internal and external behaviors) and mental health concerns including appropriate behavioral modification techniques.
• Become an expert on The Pyramid Model and help to train teaching staff to implement practices in the classroom.
• Maintain and keep current required documentation. Ensure documentation is secured as outlined in the OWCAP Employee Handbook, Health Information Protection Policy.
• Ensure that the Head Start program meets the monthly and yearly quantifiable “Outcomes” regarding mental health.
• Ensure that an on-going monitoring plan is developed and implemented to achieve compliance with Head Start Performance Standards.
• Provide guidance and/or supervision of support staff and volunteers assisting with mental health issues.
• Works closely with employees suspecting child abuse or neglect to ensure reporting to the authorities is handled correctly according to state law.
• Ensure timely completion of data entry for children and families for mental health case management.
• Participate as an effective member of the Health Team and on community boards when possible.
• Attend scheduled meetings and trainings and submit reports in a timely manner.
• Conduct trainings and meetings as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned to ensure program compliance with guidelines and regulations established by the funding source in the preparation and completion of PIR, Head Start Monitoring and any other assessment or report established by the funding source.
• Support the achievement of in-kind goals as established in the Head Start Standards and the OWCAP development system procedures
Desired Qualifications: • Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling or School Counseling.
• Licensed Mental Health professional in the State of Utah.
• One year’s experience working with young children.
