Organization's Mission: The Utah Cultural Site Stewardship Program (UCSSP) is a network of professional archaeologists, federal and state agency staff, and most importantly, volunteers who work together to monitor sensitive or threatened archaeological sites. Housed at the Utah SHPO, the program operates across federal and state boundaries to create a consistent procedure and framework for stewardship.

Thriving Utah is an AmeriCorps State program designed to support local nonprofits and public agencies in increasing their organizational capacity. Thriving Utah AmeriCorps members create and execute a capacity building plan tailored to their organization’s needs, services, and goals.

Position Summary: The AmeriCorps member in this role will serve with Utah Cultural Site Stewardship Program in Southwest Utah. If you have a desire to give back to your community, expand your skillset, and become part of a nationally recognized program, this role is for you!
Primary Responsibilities: Assist in the development of site visitation educational materials and resources to be distributed to the public.
Help to implement a site ambassador approach that will utilize UCSS Stewards to act as ambassadors on sites receiving heavy visitation.
Help to refine and implement standardized program procedures, best practices and strategy.
Helping to train and place stewards on sites as well as help with training, events, workshops and other program needs.
Be a consistent and available mentor for UCSS volunteers, and help them answer questions when they arise.
Monitor and evaluate locations of high visitor or environmental impact.
Communicate with UCSS Coordinator & land managing agencies about management needs and concerns.
Act as a UCSS Regional Coordinator and help to develop a sustainable regional coordinator model for the area.
This role will require the ability to lift 50 lbs and the ability to hike long distances 5-8 miles.
Desired Qualifications: Extensive experience with public engagement and community programming.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work well with a broad range of local partners with varied social and cultural backgrounds.
Familiarity with North American archaeology, public archaeology, history and outdoor recreation.
Is 18 or older
Is willing to undergo a background check
Has a High School diploma or equivalent
Benefits / Why Work With Us: This is an AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps is a unique service opportunity. AmeriCorps members complete a term of service from December, 2022 through November 2023. Members will serve a minimum of 900 hours during this time, approximately 19 hours per week. AmeriCorps members will receive a living allowance of $10,500 during their term of service. This living allowance will be paid bi-weekly. Additionally, upon successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps members will receive an education award of $3,172.
