Why is voting one of the most important things you can do as an American?

It guarantees you a voice in the political process. While that voice may be small as an individual, it becomes much louder when standing united together as a sector. Not only is your vote important to you, but it is also important to those who are dependent on you. When politicians see large numbers of registered voters in their district, they are more likely to pay closer attention to those constituents. Your vote is the single greatest assest in our American democracy. According to the Center for Information Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, compared to nonvoters, voters are more likely to volunteer, contact their elected officials, and stay informed on current community affairs. In the nonprofit sector, we strive to empower the communities that we serve, registering to vote should be the first step in that process.

As a Nonprofit am I legally allowed to encourage citizens to register to vote?

Yes! Nonprofits and their staff are allowed to host registration drives and encourage civic engagement as long as they remain nonpartisan. You must register everyone who asks to be registered at your event regardless of poltical affliation. We cannot stress this point enough, it is crucial to stay nonpartisan to avoid any unwanted attention from the Federal Elections Comission or any other state election agency. We encourage every American to become engaged in our political process and have their voice heard, regardless of what party they choose to belong to.
