May 2020: Curly Me!

Curly Me! Joined UNA in January of 2020 and we are so excited to have them be a part of this amazing community. Curly Me!'s mission is to "educate, empower, and encourage" black girls to be their best selves. They recognize that this is an unsettling time for many of our families and the way our girls adjust during this pandemic is important. So they have adjusted their plans on how they connect with the girls they serve. Since they are an organization who encourages social interactions with other girls and families, they have shifted their work to now be virtual.

Each week the Alyssha holds Zoom chats with their Curly Tweens and book readings for their younger girls to hear. The chats have allowed them to continue to connect with girls, not only helping them through this time, but also have a little fun while doing it! They understand that the girls miss their friends, school and "what was". To help with these feelings they recently offered, during one of their chats, a mental health therapist to connect with girls about their feelings during times that are stressful or filled with uncertainty. The response received from parents was very positive and an indicator that they are moving in the right direction. Alyssha said, “We greatly appreciate the professionals that are willing to assist us as we virtually connect with our community.”

With the contributions of those who believe in their mission, they continue to develop and find ways to reach girls for "educating, empowering and encouraging" interactions during this time.
