Job Summary: Crossroads Urban Center is a private, nonprofit, community organization working on social justice issues by providing direct services, advocacy, and community organizing assistance to thousands of low income, disadvantaged, disabled, and minority people in Utah. Crossroads employs a Pantry Assistant full time to work with the Food Pantry Director and assist in our Luisa E. Lema Emergency Food Pantry. This is a permanent position depending on the need and available funds.
Primary Responsibilities: - Sorting, shelving, and bagging, including supervision and hands on responsibility for the storage and sorting areas of the food pantry operation.
- Rotate food storage in the basement, freezer, and cooler as needed.
- Unloading trucks and assisting donors contributing food.
- Pick-up food from the Utah Food Bank and other locations for both the downtown and Westside food pantries.
- Order and pick up grocery store food purchases.
- Intake interviews and processing of requests for emergency food and other services.
- Help maintain electronic client database.
- Supervision and training of volunteers, community service workers, and staff in the pantry.
- Help in organizing holiday food programs.
- Answer phone, route calls and take messages.
- Greet and direct clients and visitors to appropriate offices.
- Provide receipts for food and clothing donations.
- Routine maintenance/clean up of downstairs area as needed.
- Possible grounds maintenance work.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Food Pantry Director and the Executive Director.
Desired Qualifications: - Knowledge of general office procedures, phone etiquette, and public relations skills.
- Drivers license and good driving record.
- Ability to do heavy lifting (50 pound boxes at a minimum).
- Ability to follow directions, work under pressure, and function as part of a team.
- Knowledge of other community agencies and resources.
- Ability to work well with all kinds of people and to treat people with dignity.
- Willingness to take on responsibilities and think independently.
- Self-motivated, resourceful, creative, well organized and dependable.
- Commitment to meeting the needs of low income people.
- Good listener.
- Record keeping and computer skills.
- Spanish extremely helpful.
