Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the UICSL Red Mesa Behavioral Health Program Director and Cultural Specialists, the Sweat Lodge Fire Keeper will prepare grounds for ceremony ahead of time and assist the Sweat Pourer/Leader to prepare for monthly spiritual activity beforehand and cleaning up afterward. During the sweat, the Fire Keeper will assist the Sweat Pourer/Leader, as needed.
Primary Responsibilities: • Approaches ceremony space in a good way (no foul language, no arguments, etc.).
• Opens agency and sweat lodge gate before ceremony and ensures space is clean, pulls weeds and picks up trash. Sweeps up debris around sweat lodge.
• Stacks fire (wood and rocks) to prepare to light fire.
• Calls the Salt Lake City Fire Dispatch, before lighting the fire, to inform them of start and end time of ceremony.
• Blesses the firewood with tobacco and then lights fire.
• Sweeps/cleans off walkways throughout ceremony to ensure space is clear of embers.
Desired Qualifications: • Master’s level clinical therapy degree preferred, however Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences field, i.e., Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or Substance Use Disorder Counselor certification or equivalent work experience will be considered.
• Must pass the State of Utah’s Office of Licensing background screening.
