Job Description: The Medical Assistant is a strong patient advocate and liaison that assists the Clinic Coordinator and Medical Director in ensuring a consistent level of high quality patient care. The position requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills as well as proficiency as a phlebotomist.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Interviews patients to obtain medical information; takes vital signs and prepares patient for physician visit
• Records and updates patients’ medical history, vital statistics and other pertinent medical information in medical records
• Ensures that lab reports are reviewed by medical providers, that attention is called to abnormal results is competently shares test result information with patients
• Assists medical providers during patient visits
• Provides Spanish interpretation services as needed for medical providers
• Acts as a liaison for patients during clinics; assists with referral work, advising of pharmacy needs and providing follow-through to patients
• Collects blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens; log the specimens and prepares them for testing
• Cleans and sterilizes instruments and properly disposes of contaminated supplies
• Schedules appointments for patients; assists at front desk as needed
• Verifies that all OB patients remain current with their visits as well as handles and documents information exchange between PHC and volunteer OB providers
• Ensures that patient information is properly stored and updated at each visit
• Ensures that exam rooms are fully stocked at all times. In tandem with Office Manager, ensures that adequate levels of supplies are maintained in the Clinic
• Assists with the cohesive organization of pharmaceutical Patient Assistance Programs including guiding patients through completing applications, communicating with pharmaceutical companies and managing refill requests
• Communicates effectively between providers, pharmacies and patients about pharmaceutical regimens
• Guides clinic workflow to maintain a timely and efficient work environment
• Other duties as assigned

COMPETENCIES:
• Minimum 3 years experience in medical/clinical environment
• Fluent in English and Spanish
• Current licensure in Utah as phlebotomist and medical assistant
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to function as part of a team
• Ability to take initiative for new responsibilities and projects
• Ability to exercise considerable tact and judgment when working with sensitive and confidential information
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills
• Ability to work well under pressure and handle difficult situations in a calm manner
• Experience with electronic medical record systems
