Job Description: The Disability Law Center is pleased to announce an AND JUSTICE FOR ALL Special Education Fellowship. The program provides opportunities for unemployed new lawyers to gain significant legal experience with select Utah nonprofit legal aid organizations, while enjoying the personal satisfaction of increasing access to justice for Utahns who are unable to afford an attorney.

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL is the umbrella organization for the state’s civil legal aid agencies, working to increase access to civil legal services for disadvantaged Utahns. The Disability Law Center, one of AJFA’s partner agencies, works to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities by providing legal representation, advocacy and education throughout Utah.

The Special Education Fellowship is for a full-time attorney to be stationed in Salt Lake City over a six-month period. The Fellowship may be renewable for an additional six months depending on project status and funding.

AJFA Fellows receive:
- Dynamic opportunities to develop and utilize their skills in the public interest sector providing legal expertise for populations desperately needing representation
- Training and experience working on important substantive legal issues
- Access to quarterly in-house professional development workshops on topical issues
- A monthly stipend of $ 2,500 for six months and an additional $2,000 upon completion
- Malpractice insurance
- May be eligible for student loan deferment

Tasks and Duties:
The attorney will represent primarily students with disabilities enrolled in Utah’s public school system when rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are violated. He/She will be supervised and trained by a Disability Law Center attorney.

- A demonstrated commitment to social justice
- Strong legal, organizational, oral and written communication skills
- A self-starting, entrepreneurial individual who can self-motivate with little oversight
- Prior special education law experience a plus, though not required
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required
- Membership with the Utah State Bar, required
