Job Description: WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday through Friday - Flexible Hours Between 8:00 am - 8:00 pm

POSITION SUMMARY:
Kelly Benson Apartments, owned and operated by the Housing Authority of the County of Salt Lake, is seeking a Full-Time AmeriCorps member to assist in serving 60 formerly homeless 55+ year old residents. The AmeriCorps member will play a vital role, alongside the Services Coordinator, Case Managers, and Property Manager, in working to identify needs and coordinate resources that promote self-sufficiency, empowerment and healthy communities, including but not limited to substance abuse referrals, mental health referrals, employment counseling, financial counseling, and housing maintenance. The AmeriCorps member will assist in providing resources to residents at Pleasant Green Villa, another Housing Authority property that houses disabled adults. Applicants must have an interest in the social service field and must be reliable and compassionate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with formerly homeless residents in their efforts towards self-sufficiency by assisting with apartment living acclimation, education on housing policies, and providing supportive service coordination.
• Assist residents with the move in process and housing orientation.
• Conduct strengths/needs assessment to determine community needs, as directed by the Services Coordinator.
• Assist residents in applying for and maintaining benefits.
• Update onsite employment and resource boards
• Coordinate with Property Management, Housing Authority staff, and partner agencies to ensure clients are receiving appropriate services.
• Coordinate with onsite Department of Workforce Services employment counselor to connect residents to employment services.
• Promote workshops, classes and programs offered onsite. This includes employment related services, independent living skills, and financial capability education.
• Create monthly community newsletter to be distributed to all residents. This includes onsite community events, property management reminders and events in the area.
• In collaboration with residents, organize, promote and participate in activities within the building and community that foster community, healthy resident relationships, and overall building stability (i.e. games days, fishing or mountain trips, facilitating budgeting workshops, movie day, planning community meals, planning holiday celebration, community gardening, exercise groups, job related groups, trips to local venues, etc.)
• Provide transportation to residents as needed (i.e. grocery trips, food bank, appointments, activities, etc.)
• Perform other duties, as assigned.

WHAT IS AMERICORPS:
The program first became operational in 1994 and has expanded over time, with over 80,000 members participating annually as of 2012. AmeriCorps engages adults in public service work with the goal of "helping others while meeting critical needs in the community." AmeriCorps State and National members engage in direct service activities, such as after-school tutoring or assisting the homeless community, and capacity-building activities, such as volunteer recruitment, for the organizations they serve.

AmeriCorps State and National is the largest of the AmeriCorps programs. AmeriCorps State operates through Service Commissions in each state.

Members are provided a modest financial compensation in the form of cost-of-living allowances; referred to as a “living stipend” up to $17, 250; Proof of Healthcare reimbursement up to $100 per month if eligible and participation, paid Student Loan Deferment, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, Child Care Assistance if needed, and the AmeriCorps Education Award. Less tangible but rewarding benefits include professional skill development and work experience. An internal study found that participation in AmeriCorps strengthened civic attitudes and sentiment.

Members commit to full-time positions offered and after successfully completing their term of service, AmeriCorps State and National members may receive the EDUCATION AWARD IN THE AMOUNT OF $5,815.

The EDUCATION AWARD AMOUNT ($5,815) can pay for additional college, graduate school courses, or it can pay off existing qualifying federal student loans. Full-time members are required to commit to a full year service agreement and complete a “minimum” of 1,700 service hours.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to clear FBI Criminal Background Check.
High School Diploma or GED. College degree a plus.
Resident or legal citizen of the United States.
Valid Utah Driver’s License and good driving record.
Typing skills.

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Computer Program (i.e., Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Display cultural competency, appreciation, compassion and understanding of the needs of clients.
