New Roots in Salt Lake City (New Roots SLC) is an innovative agriculture and food access program that provides opportunities for refugees to garden, start farm-based businesses, and access healthy, local, culturally appropriate produce.

Job Overview:
The New Roots Farm Training Program Specialist will work with the New Roots Program Manager to enhance and build the capacity of the New Roots Farm Training Program, supporting the development and delivery of trainings, facilitating resource access, and managing physical resources. The position will work closely with other New Roots SLC team members to manage the 5.5 acre Redwood Road Farm, in West Valley City, Utah, and the 13 acre Wheadon Farm in Draper, Utah. The position will coordinate farmer-participant activities and participation pertaining to all retail markets and outlets, including schools, grocers, restaurants, and a robust Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The position will assist in providing one on one technical assistance and training on organic and sustainable agricultural production, small scale production techniques, and agricultural production methods adapted for the semi-arid environment of northern Utah. The position will work with other New Roots SLC staff to oversee physical resources, infrastructure, and the facilitation of resource access for farmers. This position reports to the New Roots Program Manager
Primary Responsibilities: Major Responsibilities:
Infrastructure Development and Maintenance
• Maintain farming equipment and vehicles, including tools, irrigation systems, washing station, and post-harvest and handling equipment, including working with New Roots Program Manager to purchase and replace tools and equipment as needed and tracking inventory.
• Maintain all new and existing infrastructure, including arranging for upkeep.
• Participate in total farm planning with other New Roots staff and farm training participants.
• Implement farm and food safety plan; and coordinate with farmers to implement harvesting and post-harvest handling activities.
• Work with other New Roots SLC staff to oversee any land that is being managed by New Roots and is not yet under production by New Roots Farmers (i.e. fallow land being cover cropped or otherwise maintained by New Roots in anticipation of agricultural production).
Farmer Training and Technical Assistance
• Work with New Roots SLC staff to deliver assessments, and evaluations for all Farm Training Program participants.
• Coordinate with New Roots SLC staff to deliver production trainings, workshops, and regular field walks for all Farm Training Program participants.
• Collaborate with IRC SLC Microenterprise and Financial Literacy staff to offer business development training and technical assistance for Farm Training Program participants.
• Keep accurate case files and participant records for all Farm Training Program clients.
• Utilize language skills to communicate to clients in native languages when possible, and encourage English language development through English as a Second Language programming.

Program Monitoring
• Record farmers production data, including farm planting plans and harvest data for farmers market and retail sales.
• Monitor and record skill acquisition with New Roots farmers.
Monitor soil fertility, including soil testing, addition of soil amendments, and tracking tillage and crop rotations.

Community Relations and Resource Acquisition/Development
• Develop and maintain strong community partner relations, establish coordination meetings and conduct follow up as necessary.
• Represent New Roots in the larger community including attending outreach events, participating in media events, and planning and executing events and volunteer days.
• Work with New Roots Program Manager in fund raising, development activities, and resource acquisition of in-kind and monetary donations.
• Identify and supervise volunteers including groups and individuals

Additional Responsibilities
• Assist in working with AmeriCorps VISTAs, volunteers, and interns as necessary.
• Collaborate with other staff to represent New Roots in the larger community including attending outreach events and planning and executing events and volunteer days.
• Support New Roots SLC team through collaboration and participation in various New Roots SLC events and projects, including seasonal farmers markets, produce deliveries, and community gardening activities.
• Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the team.
• Comply with all policies, procedures and protocols of the organization.
• Other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications: Job Requirements:
• Undergraduate degree in Agronomy, Business, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Business, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of agriculture related work experience preferred.
• Ability to operate small farm equipment including vehicles, tractors (under 80 HP), tractor implements, and small equipment (tillers, mowers, trimmers, saws, and similar equipment)
• Strong organizational skills including: multi-tasking, prioritizing, planning, and effective time management.
• Motivated, flexible and able to work efficiently and independently.
• Fluency in written and spoken English, with bilingual ability preferred.
• Ability to communicate with limited-English speakers.
• Demonstrated multi-cultural experience including addressing gender-specific issues.
• Ability to safely lift approximately 30 pounds.
• Valid driver’s license, active insurance policy, and access to reliable personal transportation.
