Job Description: IRC Background:
The mission of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national program where community members have the opportunity to serve in local nonprofits for one year helping eliminate poverty. In return for service, members receive a living allowance, health insurance and other benefits.

Job Overview:
The Women’s Health AmeriCorps VISTA position will serve within the International Rescue Committee Salt Lake City’s Child and Maternal Health team. The AmeriCorps service member will build the women’s health program at IRC to better serve refugee women. The AmeriCorps service member will build the women’s health program at IRC to better serve refugee women. This includes increasing access to health care and education for women by developing programs, securing funding, building community partnerships and building capacity of IRC staff to female new Americans resettled into the United States.

Major Responsibilities:
Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Family Planning:
• Develop in-home family planning education program.
• Train staff, volunteers and interns on how to be family planning educators.
• Meet with community providers and clinics (Planned Parenthood) to educate staff on serving refugee women and in turn, educate refugee women on what to expect during a family planning appointment.

Funding Research:
• Research and develop proposals for Bridge to Safety, group classes, home visits and family planning screening and programming.
• Research best methods and current best practices for refugee women’s health across IRC US Programs network.

Community Engagement:
• Develop sustainability plan for continuing relationships with current community partners (Rape Recovery Center and SVS) and establish further partnerships (YWCA).
• Develop and conduct trainings for staff and volunteers on different topics to help with gender inclusion.

AmeriCorps VISTA Benefits:
• Living Allowance ($990 per month, pre-taxes).
• At the end of year of service, the VISTA can choose an Education Award ($5,730) or End of Service Cash Stipend ($1,500).

Job Requirements:
Required skills, knowledge and abilities:
• Grant Writing and Program development experience preferred.
• Experience with maternal health or DV interventions preferred.
• Full-time service for one year.
• Cannot be a full-time student (since it is full-time work, this is too difficult).
• Possibility of minimum work or school part-time - not to interfere with service.
• Some college experience.
• At least 18 years of age.
• General office and computer skills.
• US Citizen or permanent resident.
• Experience with diverse and vulnerable populations preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people of different linguistic backgrounds.
• Highly organized with excellent time and space management skills.
• Proficient in MS Excel and Word; database experience very helpful.
• Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor.
• Fluency in written and spoken English, bilingual ability preferred in any refugee language.
• Ability to speak passionately and articulately about IRC mission.
• Professional, friendly, and courteous attitude a must.
• Ability to drive a vehicle; must have proof of insurance and good driving record.
