Job Description: The Controller works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure financial integrity for the YWCA and its related entities. The Controller will review and reconcile cash receipts, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, prepare month-end journal entries, reconcile cash and investment accounts, account for fixed assets, and prepare financial statements. The Controller will assist the Chief Financial Officer with supporting schedules and gathering information for external financial statement audits, government audits, and assist in preparing and tracking operating, capital and grant budgets. The Controller will support the mission, vision, values, and strategic direction of the YWCA and demonstrate commitment to Sanctuary principles in daily work.
Major Responsibilities
• Model Sanctuary principles in daily staff coaching and supervision
• Provide regular training and cross-training of staff
• Review and approve daily cash receipts, weekly accounts payable, and bi-weekly payroll
• Reconcile bank, investment, and pledge and accounts receivable accounts
• Prepare monthly journal entries and reconciliations, maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules, and assist in preparing monthly grant billings
• Ensure timely billing, collection, and accounting of rent payments, tenant charges, security deposit refunds, and of early childhood education tuition and fees.
• Assist the CFO with program cost allocation; track project codes to comply with donor and grant restrictions
• Maintain government grant files to ensure they are in compliance with grant requirements
• Work with CFO to ensure all required grant/contract budgets and reports are submitted on time
• Assist the CFO in documenting processes and in developing internal control and financial policies
• Assist the CFO in preparing annual operating budgets for the YWCA Utah and related entities
• Serve as backup for accounting assistants
• Work with program directors to review monthly income statements and grant budgets
• Support the success of development staff, program directors, and other staff by being responsive, willing to learn, and meeting their legitimate needs for timely cooperation and information
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
• Must have strong technical skills and experience with general ledger accounting, financial reporting, and accounting systems, and have a proven ability to produce accurate and highly detailed work
• Three to five years progressive accounting experience required, including staff supervision; nonprofit accounting preferred. Experience with multiple nonprofit funding sources (public, private, earned) preferred.
• Capable of managing multiple, competing priorities and meeting deadlines
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Collaborative team player who works effectively with colleagues and staff across all programs and departments.
• Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Excel and Word, accounting software (Blackbaud preferred)
• Able to work evenings and weekends if required to meet deadlines
• Fluency in English (speaking and writing) required
• Able to work respectfully with people of diverse ages, races, ethnicities, nationalities, socio-economic levels, beliefs and lifestyles
• A valid Utah’s driver’s license and current automobile insurance
