Job Summary: The Associate Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for overseeing, planning and directing the day-to-day marketing and communications operations of the Humane Society of Utah. This position works closely with the Executive Director, Development Director, and senior leadership team in ensuring the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy designed to maximize the organization’s success and public profile.

The Associate Director of Marketing & Communications is also responsible for identifying communication opportunities throughout the organization and should be well-networked with internal departments, informal employee groups and key stakeholders who influence our organization.

Work Hours: The majority of work is done during business hours Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours required depending on projects and events.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $63,000

Primary Responsibilities: The essential functions of this job include, but may not be limited to those listed in this job description:

Directs and manages Utah Humane Society marketing, public relations, and communications functions; responsible for marketing and communications plan development, advertising, publications and collateral materials, oversight of website, media relations, publicity and events.

Develops annual marketing and communications strategic plan; supports affiliated department heads in formulating and executing specific marketing strategies to increase UHS business and services including adoptions, use of clinic, advocacy, event participation and organization membership.

Maintains consistent, ongoing internal and external communications with a wide variety of key customers and audiences; provides a consistent, positive message of responsibility, concern for the health of animals in our community, value of the organization and the quality of needed services through our low cost clinic.

Maintains good working relationships with news media organizations; builds a relationship of trust with news media; serves as primary liaison between Utah Humane Society and the media.

Manages media calls and inquiries; serves as primary spokesperson of UHS, involves and preps executive director, advocacy director and other subject matter experts in media responses where appropriate.

Prepares press releases; provides timely and discretionary release of information about UHS and its operations; ensures all communications from UHS are accurate, consistent and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, and UHS policies.

Manages the planning, writing and production of newsletters, annual reports, brochures, programs, forms, board presentations, signs and other branded collateral materials needed by the organization; manages weekly messaging meetings.

Assists UHS departments with marketing communication services as needed.

Participates in the planning, organizing and coordinating special events as needed.

Oversees graphic design and graphic standards; develops and maintains UHS style guide, branding and consistent image.

Oversees UHS website and social media with Mar/Comm team to maintain consistent, accurate information through both.

Manages Social Media Manager and Graphic Designer.

Assists in other special projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications: 5+ years of professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, 2+ years managing direct reports. Non profit experience desired by not required.

Excellent communications and writing/editing skills.

Excellent project and time management skills.

Ability to put together and manage a budget.

Flexibility and ability to pivot quickly when a plan needs adaptation due to changing circumstances.

Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and agendas with tact and professionalism. Ability to produce within tight deadlines and guide the marketing/communications team to do the same.

Comfortable in front of and behind the camera. Able to create video content from concept and scripting through shooting and editing.

Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud, Wordpress,MS Office Suite (powerpoint), and Google applications. Experience with Canva and Acuity a plus.

Excellent people skills, flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple projects, personalities and agendas with tact, humor and professionalism.

Experience in animal welfare is highly valued but not required.
