Position Summary: First Step House is hiring a full time Assessment Specialist. The Assessment Specialist is often the first person to provide clinical services to individuals seeking to engage in treatment for substance use disorders. These individuals are often scared, vulnerable, and in some state of detoxification. As such, a high level of customer service, empathy, and strong interpersonal boundaries is required for this position. The Assessment Specialist also interacts with a number of local government and community organizations in performing assessments and requesting funding for individuals seeking treatment. Because of this, the Assessment Specialist must act in a highly professional manner as being a representative of the organization. The Assessment Specialist assists the Program Director and Clinical Director in other administrative tasks and works in concert with the priorities of the Senior Management Team, the Executive Director, and the Board of Directors. Further, this position requires frequent and clear communication within the organization to other clinicians and administrators. The overall goals of this position are to (a) provide high-quality care for clients and potential clients, (b) provide a high level of customer service to funders, clients, and other stake holders, and (c) provide support for the clinical and administrative teams
Primary Responsibilities: Conducts full biopsychosocial assessments, reviews and updates prior assessments, and develops initial treatment plans for clients seeking treatment, admitting to treatment, or transferring between programs.
In assessing clients, uses relevant clinical skills including administering assessment tools, performing interviews, gathering sensitive information, performing diagnostic interviews, maintaining rapport, writing assessment information according to protocols, and communicating with relevant parties (e.g., clinical team, funders).
Uses the American Society of Addiction Medicine's Patient Placement Criteria (ASAM PPC-2R) in recommending client service levels and in formulating treatment plans.
Uses assessment information to refer clients to the appropriate services either within the organization or to outside organizations.
Uses the Utah Web Infrastructure for Treatment Services (UWITS) database to enter clinical assessment, billing, and client information.
Completes admissions responsibilities in a timely manner including administrative work relevant to helping clients enter treatment.

Must have the ability to effectively read and write business letters, procedures, reports, and more.
Must have the ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs (e.g., MS Word and Excel).
Education and Experience:

A Master's degree and an active license in the State of Utah as a clinical mental health counselor, social worker, or marriage and family therapist is required.
Experience with multidimensional assessments and clinical diagnoses in both substance abuse and mental health is preferred.
