Position Summary: The purpose of this salaried position is to manage Red Butte Garden’s Greenhouses and production facilities, including the Plant Production program; the operation, maintenance and repair of the Greenhouse facilities and equipment; the Integrated Pest Management Program; and the design and maintenance of the Garden’s outdoor seasonal and indoor displays. Hires, supervises and trains full-time, part-time and temporary staff and volunteers in all aspects of greenhouse team responsibilities and safety practices.
Primary Responsibilities: Manages all aspects of the Greenhouses and production facilities, and associated programs, including but not limited to: the plant production program (which annually includes over 450 different species and cultivars of plants, predominantly from seed); design, installation and maintenance of the outdoor seasonal and indoor plant displays; the Integrated Pest Management Program; plant delivery inspections and color coding per intended garden destinations, ensure preventative maintenance and repairs of Greenhouse facilities and equipment as necessary; timely inventory, ordering and scheduled delivery of necessary supplies to meet department demands; and annual trial evaluations.
Hires, supervises and provides performance feedback for full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff and volunteers. Enforces UofU and department policies and safety practices; participates on the Garden’s Safety, and Design and Maintenance Committees; and all other duties as required to support the mission of Red Butte Garden.
Desired Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Floriculture, related field or equivalency required; a valid Utah State Pesticide Applicator License; specific knowledge of entomology, pathology, propagation soils and fertility. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Four years experience in greenhouse plant production with one year experience supervising and one year experience in designing with annuals preferred.

Strongly preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in greenhouse or nursery management;
5 year’s experience in greenhouse plant production, with specific knowledge of seed stratification methods and techniques;
At least 2-years’ experience supervising others;
Demonstrated proficiency with plant insect and disease diagnosis, proper treatment methods, and pesticide safety practices;
Able to operate all equipment common to the trade, including greenhouse controllers, heaters, cooling units, fertilizer units, misters, germination chambers, greenhouse tools, etc.;
Demonstrated organizational and managerial skills;
Demonstrated personnel and supervisory skills;
Demonstrated oral, written communication skills;
Demonstrated proficiency with computers, including, Microsoft office, spreadsheets and database software;
At least 1 year’s experience designing with plants;
A valid Utah driver’s license and proof of insurability;
A commitment to provide excellent customer service.
