Job Description: The ESLC is a community-based non-profit organization committed to bringing the promise of integration, security, and empowerment to adult immigrants and refugees in Salt Lake City, Utah. We provide free English
as a second language classes in community locations throughout Salt Lake County
The Volunteer Coordinator/Community Outreach Director will help support the agency's volunteer needs and increase our community presence through the following activities:
• Recruit volunteers by responding to website submissions, and creates viable on-going training pool. Participate in community events which have potential to raise the agency’s profile with volunteer-oriented and/or immigrant and refugee service provider community groups. Create pool of prospective volunteers and maintain contact until they complete training or decline to take the training.
• Maintain volunteer sign-up for trainings, collecting all necessary volunteer application materials. Collect training and background fees, prepare materials for training and conduct background checks on all volunteers.
• Schedule and coordinate staff participation in volunteer training class held 10 times a year. Oversee all training curriculum and update and revise volunteer training and volunteer manual as necessary.
• Plan and implement volunteer workshops. Encourage broader community participation in on-going workshops. Plan at least two agency celebration events/year to engage volunteers, students, and agency partners, including a holiday party and summer picnic. Explore prospects for awareness-raising event, working with the development committee on the Board of Directors.
• Support active volunteers with regular updates. Collect data on volunteers and students, including volunteer hours, students test scores, and instructional hours, and entering them in databases. Enter instructional hours and test scores in Utopia for classes that the position supervises. Generate volunteer statistical reports and data needed for grant reporting.
• Delegate and oversee student/volunteer matches, including student assessment (testing) and recommending appropriate volunteer classroom materials. Post instructional materials on website for volunteers to access.
• Oversee media and PR contacts for agency. Post relevant agency and volunteer information on website, blog, Facebook, and other media sources. Prepare and distribute/post agency newsletter to volunteers, agency sponsors, donors, and potential partners.
• Oversee ESLC partnerships, attending partnership meetings, providing input and feedback, and maintain current MOUs with all partners..
• Inform the community about the ESLC workplace program by assisting in securing contracts for the Workplace Literacy program with local employers, which would bring new funding potential by communicating with the Executive Director, Office Manager for invoicing, and Workplace ESL Coordinator to determine that workplace goals and needs are being addressed and met.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Above average ability to communicate verbally and in writing with diverse individuals
• Experience working with low to moderate-income community groups
• Strong organizational skills and ability to collaborate with a team
• Ability to work with limited supervision at times
• Experiencing supervising and managing a large volunteer base for multiple projects.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
• TESOL or equivalent ESL certification and experience as a professional ESL teacher preferred
Other requirements: Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Salt Lake County is necessary to perform job functions. Background check will be performed on chosen candidate.
Hours/Compensation: 30 hours per week, some evenings and Saturdays required. Compensation to be determined based on qualifications.
