Job Summary: The Pro Bono Director will design and carry out the organization’s plan for private volunteer involvement in client services, including creating and/or revising priorities for pro bono cases; recruiting, training, mentoring, and retaining volunteers; and managing staff who do the administrative work for pro bono cases.
Primary Responsibilities: Volunteer Recruitment and Support
• Recruit, train, mentor and retain Pro Bono volunteers.
• Provide education and outreach presentations and trainings to community members and community partners.
• Act as a ULS representative and community liaison on community panels, knowledge communities, boards and task forces.
• Coordinate partnership opportunities with community organizations to enhance the mission and reach of ULS.

Manage Pro Bono Unit
• Manage, train, evaluate and support staff attorneys and paralegals within the Pro Bono unit.
• Set goals for the overall direction of the Pro Bono unit and work to achieve these goals and support Pro Bono team to achieve these goals.
• Develop trainings, manuals, support templates and best practices to inform Task Force practices and efficiency.
• Serve as the Substantive Subject-Matter Expert for the Pro Bono unit. Complete research and review of relevant legal topic subject matter and provide team support related to these professional competencies.
• Serve as a representative on ULS committees and sub-committees.
• Develop trainings, manuals, support templates and best practices to inform Task Force practices and efficiency.

Case Management
• Manage, organize, strategically review and contribute to the administrative work in Legal Server for all Pro Bono cases to ensure casework meets the compliance requirements for Legal Services Corporation.
• Communicate with clients and potential clients as necessary to provide brief advice and direction while they are waiting for a volunteer Pro Bono assignment.

Administrative Duties
• Prepare reports and provide information about pro bono projects by Utah Legal Services and Legal Service Corporation.
• Attend trainings and Task Force meetings; complete appropriate CLEs.
• Set calendar and tickle updates and notifications for appointments, meetings and hearings.
• Maintain good standing with Utah Bar Association.

Supervisory Responsibilities
• This position will supervise several staff attorneys and paralegals within the organization and coordinate client legal assignments with volunteer attorneys.

• Professional experience in one of the organization’s Core Case Service Areas (Domestic/Family Law, Housing, Public Benefits, Consumer, Expungements, Native American, or Agricultural Workers Law).
• Spanish speaking preferred.

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Juris Doctorate degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
• Admission and Good Standing within the Utah State Bar Association.
• 3-5 years of professional progressive experience as a practicing attorney preferred.
• 3-5 years of expertise in one of the organization’s Core Case Service Areas preferred.

Job Factors/Physical Requirements
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
