Come Together: UNA Responds to the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic places our communities in difficult and unmapped terrain.  Each nonprofit in our state supports the well-being of our communities in a multitude of ways. Nonprofits bring food to the hungry, shelter to people in need of warmth, inspiration to the weary, and so much more. Utah's nonprofits are good people, doing good things for good causes. We are proud to aid their efforts by providing nonprofits a network of support, resources, training, and benefits.

Being in and a part of our community while we shelter in place creates new challenges for us individually and organizationally. As we consider our response, one truth remains in the forefront of our thoughts: we are stronger together and therefore we must come together. We have taken the following actions to advocate for and support nonprofits in Utah. We work daily to be flexible and move with the times— even on those days when the ground shakes beneath our feet.

Nonprofit Listening Sessions with Representative McAdams and Representative Stewart 

April 30, 2020: We were honored to host Representative McAdams and Representative Stewart for two Nonprofit Listening Sessions to hear from and respond to the concerns of our nonprofits.

Connecting Executive Directors and CEOs with One Another

April 1, 2020: The Nonprofit Leaders in Utah group, open to all Executive Directors and CEOs of UNA nonprofit members, creates a community where leaders can find support, camaraderie, and a sense of community. Nonprofit leaders from around the country discussed what they are doing to keep moving forward in their local communities and how they are staying hopeful in dark times. Listen to the podcast.

Our First COVID-19 Survey of Nonprofits and How We Shared Survey Findings with the Press

Thank YouThank you to everyone who completed our first survey, conducted from March 13 to March 16, 2020, regarding the impact of the COVID-19 virus pandemic on your organization.  In just over 72 hours we received 301 responses. 

Our survey offered a place for nonprofits to provide insights and information, ask questions, and provide comments about the impact of the pandemic. Nonprofits shared 594 comments about their need for help with staffing, fundraising, crisis communication, remote working, managing events, and so much more. How Has COVD-19 Impacted Utah Nonprofits?


Utah Nonprofits Association summarized the results of its recent survey of nonprofits on the impact of COVD-19 on their organizations in a Tuesday, March 17, 2020 press release. 

The survey found that the shock of COVID-19 and its reverberation through the financial markets has weakened the financial foundation of even the most prudent and prepared organizations. The loss of any nonprofit’s ability to complete its mission will exacerbate the impact of COVID-19 on the health and safety of Utah communities. Read the complete press release here.

Coronavirus (Covid-19): Several Ounces of Prevention: March 12, 2020


Covid-19 (Novel Coronavirus) is an infectious disease that causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever and in more severe cases, pneumonia. The World Health Organization recently declared the outbreak a pandemic.

We encourage you to (calmly) adopt common sense measuresvent  to mitigate the spread of the virus. In absence of a cure, several ounces of prevention will go a long way to protect our teams, our families, and our stakeholders.

Strategies in Response to the Virus
The virus spreads by person to person contact. Limiting contact by tele-commuting or hosting on-line meetings will slow the progression of the virus. These resources may help you decide if these strategies will work for you. (We think that they can. We have substituted video conferencing for in-person meetings and training sessions and have been working from home on Fridays for several months.)

Kate Rubalcava, UNA CEO, and Rob Harter, UNA Board Chair, shared the UNA response to the virus. Among the items they listed in an email to our stakeholders, they identified ways to prevent the spread of disease, ideas for employers to adopt to protect the health of their teams, and the importance of not conflating the disease with a population or nationality.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) outlines ways to protect our communities from Covid-19.

The State of Utah provides information on their work to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus and a hotline to call if you’re concerned that you may have the virus.
