Her journey began in 1999 at Odyssey House, where she initially ran an upholstery shop for clients and the community. This initiative was more than just a vocational program—it was a lifeline that equipped individuals with essential life skills such as budgeting, business operations, customer communication, and project management. Michael's hands-on approach not only fostered practical abilities but also instilled a deep sense of confidence and independence in her clients.

Over the years, Michael expanded her influence by working closely with the graduates of Odyssey House. She has been instrumental in providing aftercare support, organizing events like graduate BBQs, and ensuring that all graduates remain connected and supported. Her commitment to clients extends far beyond professional obligations; she is always available to assist graduates in times of crisis, going above and beyond to ensure they feel valued and supported.

After her promotion to an administrative assistant, Michael played a pivotal role in growing the Association of Substance Use Professionals. She was a fierce advocate for greater representation of substance use professionals in legislative policy-making, which led to a significant policy change allowing individuals with criminal backgrounds to become licensed as Substance Use Disorder Counselors (SUDCs). Michael didn’t stop there; she became an SUDC herself, dedicating her expertise to support this vital program.

For eight years, Michael worked with the Department of Corrections, assisting individuals in halfway houses in Ogden. She led substance use groups, provided individual counseling, and supported clients in their transition back into society. Her work has been characterized by a deep sense of empathy and an unwavering commitment to helping individuals rebuild their lives.

Michael’s impact further grew when she became a part of Odyssey’s Executive Leadership Team as the Director of Transitional Housing. Today, she runs the largest sober living community in Utah, encompassing apartments and family units. Her leadership and vision have created safe, supportive spaces for individuals and families in recovery, providing them with a stable foundation to rebuild their lives.

One of Michael's most recent and impressive undertakings is the revitalization of boarding home units for men and women struggling with serious and persistent mental illness. These individuals were living in substandard conditions, but Michael, despite having a full plate, took on this project at the request of Salt Lake County leadership, driven by her conviction that they deserved better. Thanks to her relentless efforts, these programs have been completely overhauled and now operate at full capacity, offering a high standard of living and care for the residents.

Beyond her professional achievements, Michael is known for her generosity and willingness to help others. Whether supporting sober softball leagues, organizing turkey drives for less fortunate families during the holidays or finding a dining room set for a family in need, Michael's actions consistently demonstrate her commitment to the well-being of others. Her support extends not only to her clients but also to her colleagues, whom she mentors and assists whenever needed.

Michael’s dedication to creating a nurturing and supportive environment for her clients and the community is truly remarkable. She ensures that her clients have the necessary supplies for cooking and cleaning and goes above and beyond to make holidays special, particularly for parents with children. Michael has a unique ability to create moments of magic for those she serves, making her a deserving candidate for this recognition.
