Job Description: The English Skills Learning Center (ESLC) is accepting applications for a full-time ESL Program Assistant who will support our Empowering Parents Program, which teaches English to parents of children in a number of schools within Salt Lake City and Granite School Districts. The ESLC is a non-profit organization committed to bringing the promise of integration, security, and empowerment to adult immigrants and refugees in Salt Lake City. This position is to assist low to moderate-income refugee and immigrant families with literacy initiatives.
The ESLC Empowering Parents Program Objectives are:
1. To increase opportunities for immigrant and refugee adults to develop secure and stable parental relationships with their children in a safe and sustainable financial environment.
2. To increase connection between community and school through participation in regularly held ESL (English as a Second Language) classes at the child’s elementary school.
3. To increase involvement of families and students in programs, school-sponsored committees, and community organizations that promote student success.
4. To encourage parents to read with their children.
Responsibilities of ESL Program Assistant:
1. Organize small group ESL instruction for immigrant and refugee parents of children in elementary schools across Salt Lake County.
2. Recruit and assist in training and mentoring volunteer teachers to work with adult ESL students.
3. Complete individual service project hours within the community.
4. Complete 1700 hours of supervised service to ESLC within 10-month assignment.
Position Qualifications:
1. Above average ability to communicate verbally and in writing with diverse individuals.
2. Significant experience working with low to moderate-income community groups.
3. Ability to motivate and supervise volunteers.
4. Professional competence in cross-cultural situations.
Preference will be given to candidates who have ESL certification and/or experience teaching
English as a Second Language.
TIME COMMITMENT: 40 hours per week as necessary to meet the 1700-hour commitment within designated position time frame (August 2018 – May 2019), with flexibility to work some evenings as required.
AmeriCorps is a national organization modeled after the Peace Corps. It is funded through the National Corporation for Community Service and the Utah State Commission on Volunteers. Members volunteer their time working with schools in Utah and are paid a monthly living allowance over 10 months. At the end of each service year, members are given an educational award to use toward payment of student loans, school tuition, fees and or books.
