Luis Garza

Comunidades Unidas

Luis is the Executive Director at Comunidades Unidas. He has been involved in community affairs for the past 10 years. Prior to working at Comunidades Unidas, Luis worked for the SLC Mayor's Office of Diversity & Human Rights, The State Office of Ethnic Affairs, and the University of Utah Hospital.
Luis has Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and International Relations, and a minor in Business from the University of Utah. In 2011 he obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration with a Non-profit Management emphasis also from the University of Utah. He focused his graduate thesis on Mexican migrant health, their access to health care services, and the particular challenges this population faces when interacting with the Health Care System in the United States.
Luis is very passionate about US and Mexican politics and their implications on migration and immigrant integration. Luis is accredited by the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Immigration Appeals, to provide immigration services in the state of Utah.
Luis has received numerous awards during his career: 

  • 2013 Community Foundation of Utah’s “Enlightened 50”
  • 2009 Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation Scholar.
  • 2005 and 2007 College of Social & Behavioral Science Honor Roll Scholar.
  • 2004 and 2006 University of Utah’s Department of Economics Scholar.
  • 2006 Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation Scholar.
  • Dean’s List for 4 consecutive years.
